Stefania Marini is an architect and a PhD student in Regional Planning and Public Policies at the Università Iuav di Venezia, where she is developing a doctoral thesis on the active role of schools in commoning and urban regeneration projects. Her research interests also include collaborative practices, sustainability, and social housing. Since 2019, she has been a teaching assistant in urbanism and planning laboratories. She is an activist and she has been involved in several creative and innovative urban projects. She is currently a member of the board of AGEC, a public company which manages real estate and utilities in Verona.

Klarissa Pica: after a period of study at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and an internship at the Public Works studio in London, she graduated in Planning and Policies for the City, the Territory and the Environment at the Università Iuav di Venezia where she is currently a PhD student in Urbanism. Her research reflects on the possibility of recognising the coast as a common good to be rethought from a socio-ecological transition perspective. She is also interested in urban regeneration and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Since 2020, she has been a teaching assistant in the urbanism and planning laboratories at Iuav.
Carla Tedesco Università Iuav di Venezia , Dipartimento di Culture del Progetto

Carla Tedesco is Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning at the Dep. of Architecture and Arts – Università Iuav di Venezia. Her research interests are concerned with Europeanization of urban policy and spatial planning in Italy, community involvement in urban regeneration and social innovation. She has carried out research work, presented papers and published on these issues being part of national and international research groups. She has been deputy mayor in charge for urban planning and policy in Bari, Southern Italy (2014-2019).

Abstract

In recent years, in Italy, the increasing role of Universities’ third mission fostered public engagement activities carried out by universities in the field of urban planning and policy. This followed a broad scientific debate on university/city relationships. Within this framework, this contribution focuses on the role that the university plays as an urban actor in (multi)local activation processes in the field of bottom-up urban regeneration and climate change adaptation. It draws on the Academy initiative experience, developed within the CLIM-ACT! program promoted in Verona by a network of actors including Iuav University of Venice. This project aimed at building knowledge at the intersection between environmental sustainability and civic activism.
